Dear friends,

Sara Crowley and John Haggerty are reading and selecting stories in January. Here is what they are looking for. Our selection is competitive, so please send us your best!

Sara Crowley’s wishlist:

I’m looking for stories with emotional truth and crisp, clear prose.

John’s wishlist:

I am more a maximalist than a minimalist. I like Flannery O’Connor, Faulkner, and Melville more than Hemingway and Carver. I like beautiful sentences—if you write with rhythm and electricity, it will make me take notice.

Literature should take chances. Send me something that you were afraid to write, something that made you so uncomfortable you didn’t want to be in the same room with it. Break some rules. Teeter on the edge of failure. That’s where things really start to come alive.
