John Haggerty and Barbara Barrow are now reading and selecting stories. Here is what they are looking for.
I am more a maximalist than a minimalist. I like Flannery O’Connor, Faulkner, and Melville more than Hemingway and Carver. I like beautiful sentences—if you write with rhythm and electricity, it will make me take notice.
Literature should take chances. Send me something that you were afraid to write, something that made you so uncomfortable you didn’t want to be in the same room with it. Break some rules. Teeter on the edge of failure. That’s where things really start to come alive.
I like offbeat writing and even dark humor, especially if it’s tied to complex character development. Some of my faves: Amber Sparks, Carmen Maria Machado, Shirley Jackson.
We look forward to reading your work!
